13th - abolish Slavery
14th - freed slaves are to become citizens with all of the rights
15th - right to vote cannot be denied by race, or stature if a citizen
Andrew Johnson- Reconstruction plan
-must elect new state gov’t, create new state constitution, cancel war debts and ratify 13th amendment.
Civil Rights Act of 1866- struck down “black codes”
14th made slaves citizens
Johnson vetoed both bills, Congress overrode the President and passed bills
Sharecropping: Farmers needed labor to grow crop, freed slaves need land and a way to make money. Eventually led to a legal form of slavery. Sharecropper would borrow money to buy supplies but never make enough money to pay of debt.
